In today’s fast-paced world, globalization has led to a phenomenon known as the ‘EMPTY NEST.’
Once lively homes are now often quiet, as elders find themselves living alone just when they need family the most. Whether it’s due to distance or circumstances, this “empty nest syndrome” leaves many seniors feeling isolated, vulnerable, and concerned about their safety and health.
But here’s where we step in!
Dr. V S Natarajan Geriatric Foundation is on a mission to turn these silent homes back into thriving communities. By rallying local people, we’re bringing back the village spirit—one that cares for its elders and prepares us all for the golden years.
What does the Neighborhood Senior Support Group (NSSG) do?
NSSG is a unique community initiative that creates bonds between neighbors—whether you’re family or not.
We believe that living next door to someone for years means you’re more than just strangers! Through this initiative, we’re connecting service-minded individuals and groups to look out for elders in their area. These include:
- Students from local schools and colleges through NSS units
- Citizen forums like Exnora, Senior Citizen Associations, and Residents Welfare Groups
- Neighborhood-based organizations like Rotary Club, Lions International, and Jaycees
- Counselors trained in geriatric care (especially for bereavement and emotional support)
Each NSSG group is supported by local Police Station Heads and Social Welfare Officers, adding an extra layer of care and safety for our seniors.
What makes NSSG special?
It’s all about teamwork and heart! Here’s what makes NSSG stand out:
- Inter-generational Friendships: With young students involved, elders enjoy companionship from a whole new generation, creating lively and meaningful connections.
- Fresh Retirees Leading the Charge: Energetic new retirees, often referred to as the ‘young old,’ bring their professional experience and wisdom, making the systems smooth and efficient.
- Rotating Leadership: Inspired by international models like the Rotary Club, NSSG rotates its office bearers regularly. This ensures that ideas stay fresh, transparency is maintained, and there’s never a dull moment!
- Rewards & Recognition: We love to celebrate kindness! Regular rewards and recognition programs encourage our members to keep up the great work.
NSSG’s Focus Areas:
Our NSSG Commandos (yes, we call our volunteers “Commandos” because they’re on a mission!) are all about making sure the elders in their neighborhood feel safe, connected, and cared for. Their responsibilities are clear, focusing on:
- Battling Loneliness: Making sure no elder feels alone by fostering connections and building a sense of community.
- Ensuring Safety: Creating a watchful, caring environment where seniors feel secure.
- Handling Medical Emergencies: Being prepared to assist during health crises, ensuring timely help.
